The APWU: Still Fighting for You!
You helped build the union. You were there when the APWU fought for — and
won — better wages, benefits, and working conditions. Now, as a postal
retiree, you rely on the retirement benefits and healthcare coverage the
union negotiated to enrich the quality of your life.

Although you have moved on to a new chapter in your life, we hope you
will remain involved with the union as an active member of the AWPU Retirees
Department.
Here’s why:
The APWU is still fighting for you.
The union maintains a strong voice for active and retired postal employees
in the halls of Congress, where a wide array of decisions that affect us
are made.
We are working to pass legislation that would:
- Eliminate the so-called Government Pension Offset
and Windfall Elimination Provisions of current Social Security law. These provisions unfairly reduce
earned Social Security benefits for retirees who receive Civil Service Retirement
System benefits. Many postal retirees have paid a substantial amount into
the Social Security system from wages they (or their spouses) earned in
non-federal jobs. Passing S. 206/H.R. 82 and H.R. 726 would allow them to
receive Social Security benefits that fully reflect their contributions.
- Allow postal, federal, and military retirees to pay
for their healthcare insurance premiums with pre-tax income. Passing
Healthcare “Premium
Conversion” legislation (H.R. 1110/S. 773) would extend a benefit
enjoyed by active-duty federal and military employees to retirees;
eliminate an inequity, and save the average USPS retiree hundreds of dollars
annually to help offset rising healthcare premiums.
- Raise the government share of federal retiree healthcare
costs. Since 2001,
FEHB premiums have increased more than 50 percent. Passing H.R. 1256
would raise the employer’s contribution from 72 to 80 percent,
making it easier for retirees to afford quality healthcare.
In addition, the union continues the struggle to make our nation better
by working to win support for:
- The Mail Network Protection Act, to require the Postal Service to
bargain with postal unions before it engages in significant subcontracting.
- The Employee Free Choice Act, to ensure that working people can
freely choose to form unions.
- Healthcare Reform Legislation, to guarantee access to affordable
healthcare for all Americans.
- Vote-by-Mail Legislation, to enhance our democracy by making
it easier for eligible voters to cast their ballots.
- Elimination of the Unfair Three-Day Waiting Period before postal
employees who suffer on-the-jobs injuries are eligible to receive federal
workers-compensation benefits.
