U.S. Congressman Steve King said Tuesday he has received word that the inspector general of the U.S. Postal Service will soon complete an audit of the study conducted to determine whether the Sioux City mail processing facility will be consolidated.

On May 30 King gained the support of U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin in asking the inspector general to conduct an audit to review the cost factors associated with the proposed consolidation and asked the postmaster general to halt the consolidation until the completion of the audit.

King's office will host a meeting with the inspector general's auditors and representatives from other members of the Iowa congressional delegation Nov. 13. The meeting will review the inspector general's findings before the audit is finalized in late November.

King said he's concerned with the parameters under which the study was conducted.

"While we don't yet know what the findings of the audit are, I hope the audit by the inspector general will give the people of Sioux City the information to determine if a consolidation is legitimate," said King. "For Sioux City to lose its postmark and put next-day delivery at risk, the inspector general's audit needs to reveal a compelling business case."

Members of the Sioux City Postal Workers Union Local 186 will picket the U.S. Post Office in downtown Sioux City Thursday protesting the proposed consolidation plan. Thursday's picket will be part of a National Day of Information Picketing about the 51 Area Mail Processing studies being conducted by the postal service.
