Postal workers protest consolidation plan

P-I STAFF

About 30 postal employees waved signs in downtown Seattle Thursday to protest a plan to consolidate mail-processing centers nationwide.

Jeff Mansfield, a Seattle representative with the American Postal Workers Union, voiced concern that the plan would leave Washington state with processing centers in just Seattle and Spokane.

He feared the plan would slow down service and that employees would lose jobs. He said postal supervisors have not explained the plan adequately.

The rally was held at the post office at 301 Union St. It was one of many nationwide. Although the state has eight processing centers, none of them will close, said Ernie Swanson, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman in Seattle. But first-class, stamped-mail operations have been moved from Olympia to Tacoma.
