APWU Youth Make Unionism 'A Family Affair'

(09/12/08) The APWU Women's Organizing Committee has announced the winners of the union's "Make it a Family Affair" creativity contest, reports APWU Regional Coordinator Liz Powell, the panel's chairwoman.

The contest — designed to promote among our youth a better understanding of the vital role unions and the APWU play in our lives — invited the children or grandchildren of APWU members across the country to submit an original work expressing this theme in song, poem, short video, or PowerPoint presentation. Women’s Organizing Campaign Expands Rolls as It Rolls Along

In a special “APWU RV,” the union’s Women’s Organizing Campaign rolled into Las Vegas Aug. 13 after a two-week tour of California, from bottom to almost the top, and then back south again. “We’re a little road-weary, but we made all our scheduled stops at Postal Service facilities large and small, and everywhere in between,” said Northeast Regional Coordinator Liz Powell, the campaign’s chairperson. “All in all, it was a successful ‘drive’ through the state as we signed up dozens of new members along the way, including several members-at-large.”

(08/01/08) The APWU Women’s Organizing Campaign is in the midst of a two-week California road trip, a multi-stop bus ride from San Diego almost all the way to the Oregon border and back south again, culminating across state lines in Las Vegas, the site of the APWU convention.

“In a special ‘APWU Recreational Vehicle,’ we’re taking to the highway, with stops at facilities large and small and everywhere in between,” said Northeast Regional Coordinator Liz Powell, the campaign’s chairperson. “We’ll be meeting with the locals and with members-at-large and we’re asking the locals to arrange for APWU retiree chapters and other retirees to take part.” [read more]

Time Running Short
For ‘Creativity Contest’ Entries

(06/03/08) APWU members are reminded that entries for the union’s creativity contest for their children and grandchildren are due by June 30.

Sponsored by the American Postal Workers Union, the contest is designed to promote among our youth a better understanding of the vital role unions and the APWU play in our lives. Contestants are invited to submit an original work expressing this theme in one of the following formats:

  • Video/DVD movie of five minutes or less;

  • Song (recorded on CD) of five minutes or less;

  • Poem — 200 words or less;

  • PowerPoint presentation — 25 slides or less.

The contest coincides with the union’s 2008 Women’s Organizing Campaign, whose theme is, “Make It a Family Affair.” But the contest is not limited to new members or to women — it is, after all, about family. [read more]

The theme is simple enough: “Organizing Is Our Future.” And the APWU is continuing its straightforward strategy to increase union membership, asking that all local and state offices develop committed organizing committees, healthy organizing budgets, and a solid plan of action.

For the second year in a row, the APWU organizing campaign is focusing on women in the workforce.

“We want to look back on 2008 and say that the campaign took place in all postal facilities in the United States and its territories,” said union Organization Director Frank A. Romero.

The union’s national headquarters has been providing organizing materials and reimbursing local and state offices 50 percent of the cost of pre-planned and approved organizing drives. “It still all comes down to one-on-one meetings,” said Northeast Regional Coordinator Liz Powell, who is spearheading the APWU “Make It a Family Affair” organizing campaign. Continue the ‘Family’ Tradition

(02/27/08) In 2007, when the APWU launched a Women’s Organizing Campaign, the results were outstanding: Approximately 11,000 postal employees joined the APWU last year as a result of the women’s campaign and other organizing efforts. [read more]

Women Labor Leaders
Urged to Be a Force for Change

(01/01/08) Women in the labor movement must be a force for change, APWU President William Burrus told delegates to the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) convention in Las Vegas. “You must lead that change. It will not occur by itself. It won’t happen because it is time. It won’t happen because it needs to happen. It will happen because individuals will lend their back to the effort and make it happen. And you — members of CLUW — must lead that change.” [read more]
