Tentative Contract Raise Will Be
Second Largest in Union’s History

Burrus Update #9-05, July 22, 2005

The tentative agreement to extend the contract includes the second highest wage increase in our history. Over the 34 years of contract negotiations that began in 1971, the wage increase of 1.6 percent — or $728 for a Level 5 Step 0, employee — will be second only to the increase of $757, which we received in November 1998.

Since 1973, APWU contracts have included negotiated cost-of-living adjustments that are determined by increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The COLAs have ranged from a high of $832 in May 1980, when inflation was rampant, to a low of zero.

Despite the modest size of the percentage increase — 1.6 — the actual dollar value is higher than every wage increase received over the 34-year period except one.

The option for the membership is to vote “yes” to receive the second highest wage increase in our history, or to receive no wage increase as we battle in arbitration.

A list of salary increases (for wage increases and cost-of-living adjustments) is shown below. (The $728 amount is listed as an “estimated” number, because it will be based on the COLA that takes effect in September 2005. With five of the six reporting periods calculated, however, the final figure is expected to be quite close to the amount listed.)
