An Expression of Solidarity

Burrus Update #04-06, Feb. 1, 2006

Sadly, we learned today that Charlotte Colton has died of injuries she suffered in the shooting at the Santa Barbara P&DC on Jan. 30. Authorities have identified the shooter as Jennifer Sanmarco, a former employee, who was placed on disability retirement in 2003. Investigators now suspect that a former neighbor of Sanmarco’s, who was found shot to death in her apartment, may also be one of her victims.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims, their families, and the postal workers who have suffered through this tragic ordeal.

To express the solidarity of APWU members, I will travel to Santa Barbara on Feb. 2, where I will join Postmaster General Jack Potter, Mail Handlers Union President John Hegarty, Postal Supervisors President Ted Keating, and APWU Western Regional Coordinator Omar Gonzalez.

It is admirable that, by and large, the press has not used this terrible event to portray all postal employees as violent and that the media has refrained from using the term “going postal” in relation to this tragedy. From all of the information we have received in the early stages of the investigation, this event was about a troubled individual with issues and a gun.

We, the postal workforce, are proud of our service to the American public, and hold our co-workers in the highest levels of respect. This is our job, but we see ourselves as a family.
