Convention’s COPA Highlights

(This article first appeared in the May/June 2008 issue of The American Postal Worker magazine.)

APWU’s most generous contributors to COPA, the union’s Committee on Political Action, will enjoy a night of fun and will be eligible to win valuable prizes at the union’s 19th biennial National Convention in August.

COPA Night is always a fun-filled event.

COPA Night is always a fun-filled event.

Delegates who have contributed at least $100 in 2008 (or in 2007) will receive two tickets to the always-popular “COPA Night,” to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Ticket-holders’ children can also attend.

In addition, there will be two COPA raffle drawings each day of the convention. Only APWU members who have given at least $25 to COPA this year, or who are making recurring contributions will be eligible to win. (Recurring donations can be made via Electronic Funds Transaction or credit card, through PostalEASE, or through a retiree’s annuity payment.) You do not have to be present to win.

The COPA raffle system will work as follows: Members who have given $25-$99 will be credited with seven tickets; $100-$249, 15 tickets; $250-$499, 25 tickets; $500 and up, 35 tickets. To increase the COPA fund as well as their chances of winning a drawing, delegates will be allowed to make donations throughout the convention.

Awards will be distributed at the COPA and Legislative booths in recognition of the highest-giving locals in several categories, based on size. The top individual contributors also will be commended.

States contributing the most towards their nationally-established COPA goals will receive preferential seating on the convention floor. Yearly goals for each state are based on union membership and retiree numbers, and are established to meet a $2 million annual goal nationwide. The calculations are based on donations made from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2008.
