Convention
Planning Moves Into High Gear
(07/31/08) As the APWU’s 19th Biennial National Convention
nears, planning for the event is in full swing at the union’s
national headquarters. As of the end of July, 3,009 delegates representing
425 locals had registered for convention credentials. More than 3,100
delegates are expected to attend. Registration already exceeds attendance
at the last convention; the highest daily delegate count for the 2006
convention was 2,892. Many local presidents have reported that the
online delegate-registration process was easy and straightforward.

Challenges! Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
(07/01/08) The American Postal Workers Union’s 19th Biennial Convention
will chart the union’s course as we prepare for our nation’s
most important general election in decades and continue the fight to
protect our jobs, our rights, and our future.
The five-day National Convention, set for Aug. 18-22 in Las Vegas, is
the union’s highest decision-making body. To help the union prepare
for the challenges ahead, resolutions on a wide variety of subjects
will be introduced, debated, and voted upon. The resolutions will
give focus to the union’s goals in contract negotiations and in the
political arena, as well as in helping the organization function
more smoothly and better serve the membership.

Convention Seating Again Based on COPA Goals
(07/01/08) Seating on the floor of the APWU
National Convention in Las Vegas in August will again be determined
by the progress that states — based on their size — have
made toward their COPA goals. The seating plan is designed to reward
states who have worked hard to reach their goals and to encourage those
who have lagged behind.
COPA fund-raising never stops, and there will be two COPA raffle drawings each day. APWU members who have given $25 or more this year or who contribute through a recurring-payment plan (e.g., PostalEASE or via EFT contributions) will be eligible. One drawing will be for qualified givers in the hall, and one for the COPA givers who are unable to attend.
The number of raffle tickets will be based on the amount donated; delegates will have the chance to improve their odds by making donations throughout the week.
Delegates who contributed at least $100 in 2007 or who have donated that much this year will receive two tickets to the always-popular “COPA Night,” which will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Ticket-holders’ children can also attend.
Convention Childcare Program Cancelled
County Regulations
Restrict On-Site Activities
(05/23/08) While delegates to the last several APWU
national conventions have had childcare services available
to them, a recently-passed local ordinance means that
the union will be unable to coordinate activities for
children at this year’s gathering in Las Vegas.
In the past, the union has contracted with KiddieCorp
to organize programs for children ages six months to
12 years. In early March, however, event planners alerted
the APWU to a Clark County law that restricts the childcare
services that area hotels are allowed to provide. [read
