20 Years of Equal Rights in the Workplace
July 21, 2010
The APWU is marking the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with a proclamation of recommitment to the law’s goal.
Passed by Congress in 1990, the ADA is a wide-ranging law that prohibits discrimination in the workplace against employees with disabilities. It offers protection to employees with physical or mental impairments that “substantially limit a major life activity.” Under this legislation, employees with disabilities are given equal opportunities in hiring, job advancement, workers compensation, and other workplace conditions and privileges. Postal facilities are covered by the ADA.
In honor of the law’s 20th anniversary, the National ADA Symposium created the “2010 by 2010” campaign to “proclaim a recommitment to the vision and spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act — full inclusion of people with disabilities into American life.” The goal of the campaign is to collect 2,010 proclamations of recommitment to the mission of the ADA by the end of the year.
