APWU Joins UNI Discussion Of Future of Women in the Workforce
November 20, 2010
APWU Research and Education Director Joyce Robinson inspired women union leaders at a conference in Japan to support the Union Network International’s demand that multinational corporations create good jobs and decent work for women workers.
Robinson, who is president of the UNI Americas Women’s Committee, and APWU Human Relations Director Sue Carney joined representatives from 182 unions and 66 countries. Delegates pledged to support union organizing and to push for multinational efforts in support of workers’ rights.
Participants discussed plans to get young workers involved in the labor movement, as well as issues that primarily affect women in the workforce, such as low pay, lack of paid maternity leave, and mistreatment of women workers.
Conference delegates also passed a resolution that would guarantee equality for women’s representation in UNI and supporting 40 percent female representation within the global union.
