The APWU Organization Department has released its 2010 list of “Best Organized Locals” by membership category. Winners of the union’s 2010 Biennial Award are:
Over 5,000 Members:
New York Metro Area Local (85%)
2,000-5,000 Members:
Boston Metro Area Local (96%)
1,000-1,999 Members:
Long Island Area Local (94%)
500-999 Members:
Buffalo Local (98%)
200-499 Members:
Philadelphia BMC (99%)
100-199 Members:
New Castle PA Local (96%)
50-99 Members:
Western Area KS Supply Center Area Local (100%)
On a nationwide basis, 83% of eligible postal employees are members of the APWU.
“The founder and first president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), Samuel Gompers once said, ‘You can’t do it unless you organize,’” said Organization Department Director Martha Shunn-King. “How true that statement still is today!”
“Congratulations to the locals that have maintained such high levels of membership at a time when the Postal Service is downsizing and minimal hiring going on,” she added.
“It takes dedication and hard work to continue to approach non-members and get them to join.
“I challenge the locals to beat their previous record. Without a strong membership we will struggle to survive. We must continue to fight the good fight not only for us but for everyone. When unions do well, so does the rest of America.”
