Kentucky APWU Members Deliver World’s Largest Christmas Card

Members of the Central Kentucky Area Local APWU set out to brighten the hopes of a nine-year old boy this holiday season by delivering the world’s largest Christmas card.

Dalton Dingus, who suffers from stage four cystic fibrosis, made a Christmas wish to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most Christmas cards ever received.

Dingus was well on his way to breaking that record of 35,000 letters when the employees at the Mount Sterling post office decided to help Dingus and delivered the world’s largest Christmas card, a four-by-eight foot card weighing 46 pounds.

In addition to the oversized card, the postal workers added more than 12,000 letters and 220 packages to the delivery. On Dec. 15, a five-ton mail truck was escorted to Dingus’ home by a convoy of policemen, firefighters, local and state officials. Postal workers dressed as Santa Claus and his helpers hand-delivered the Christmas card to Dingus.

“Our steward, Mark Wright contacted me with the idea of giving Dingus the oversized Christmas card. I was so touched by his story. I jumped right on board. It meant a lot to me and to the employees at the Mount Sterling post office to make this boy’s wish come true,” said Randy Bradley, President of the Central Kentucky Area Local.

Dingus, who is battling the lung disorder, has already (unofficially) broken the Guinness world record and he has increased his goal. As of Saturday, Dalton’s mother Jessica Dingus estimated the number of letters received to be approximately 110,000, and she said they expect to keep receiving letters through Christmas.
