The American Postal Workers has launched a petition drive calling on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to block the merger of Staples and Office Depot. The merger would give Staples a monopoly in a key sector of the economy.

“This monopoly is no game,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. ”A Staples takeover of Office Depot would mean higher prices and fewer choices for consumers, especially school kids and their parents. It would lead to more store closings and it would have adverse effect on workers. It’s not in the public interest.

“Please sign the petition to stop the merger,” Dimondstein said. “Let's tell the FTC that consumers want real enforcement of our nation's anti-trust laws.”
