APWU Stumps for Sanders in Oregon
May 5, 2016
APWU members attended rallies in Oregon on May 3 supporting Bernie Sanders for President.
Daniel Cortez, Health Plan director of the Portland Area Local, spoke at rallies in Portland and Salem about the National Executive Board’s decision to endorse Sanders.
“Time and time again he has proven himself to be a leader in the fight to protect the people’s Postal Service,” Cortez said. “In addition to calling the shuttering of 140 mail processing plants and the elimination of overnight delivery standards a ‘disaster that is negatively impacting Americans all over this country,’ Bernie has argued passionately for the restoration of postal banking.
“Today, far too many Americans have to rely upon the predatory practices of pay-day lenders simply to make ends meet,” he continued. “In a speech in January of this year, Bernie vowed to rein in Wall Street. He promised to fight to provide decent banking opportunities for low income communities by, among other things, allowing the USPS to engage in basic banking services.”
Other speakers included Deborah Burger, president of National Nurses United; Larry Cohen, former president of the Communications Workers of America; Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR).
Oregon's Primary Day is Tuesday, May 17.
