James W. (Bucky) Walter, a long-time National Business Agent for the Clerk Craft, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26. He was 86.

Walter was a member of the Birmingham Area Local and was an outspoken advocate for the APWU members he represented.  He retired from union service in 1986.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Walters’ death,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “Our hearts go out to his family.”

“He was a great guy with a good sense of humor and a mentor to many of us,” said Larry Sorrells, President of the APWU North Carolina Council. “His reputation and ability as an arbitration advocate was exemplary.”

After high school, Walter saw combat in World War II as a U.S. Merchant Marine and as a member of the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. Following military service, Walter began his career working as a Railway Mail Clerk before taking on other jobs for the post office and devoting more time to union matters.

Walter was also deeply involved veterans affairs. He was President of the American Merchant Marine Veterans and served in various positions in the American Legion, Blue Star Salute, and other veterans groups.
