Fight Plant Closures and Consolidations!

Earlier this summer the Postal Service announced plans to close or consolidate 82 mail processing plants.  On August 1st, the Postal Service published in the Federal Register a reduction in Service Standards, which makes their closure and consolidation plan possible.  Unless we build a movement to protect current Service Standards and stop these plant consolidations and closings, these cuts will create a massive mail slowdown nationwide, including the elimination of overnight delivery of first-class mail.

Many in Congress are seeking to block this wrongheaded move by the Postal Service.  Recently, a bipartisan group of 50 senators called upon the Senate Appropriations Committee to legislate a one-year ban on closing mail processing facilities or degrading mail service standards.

And now, a growing number of House members are doing the very same thing.  Last week, a bipartisan group of 5 Republicans and 5 Democrats began circulating a House version of the Senate letter which is to be sent to House Appropriations Committee leadership.

So far, 54 representatives in total have signed on to the House letter.  Has your representative signed on yet?  To find out, click here.
