Guffey Urges Union Members: Get Out and Vote!
November 2, 2012
As Nov. 6 draws near, APWU President Cliff Guffey is urging union members to “get out and vote!”
“This has been a long campaign and the stakes are high, especially for working people,” he noted. “Let’s do everything we can to re-elect President Obama and other candidates who support working families.
“I urge all APWU members to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Vote as if your job and your future depend on it, because they do!”
“Many new voter ID laws have been passed in the last two years, so it is crucial that eligible voters know what they need to take to the polls to make sure their vote is counted.”
APWU Legislative and Political Director Myke Reid encouraged union members to take steps now to ensure they are able to vote.
- Check your registration status by visiting www.canivote.org.
- Polling places may have changed since you last voted. Make sure you know your voting location by checking www.canivote.org.
- For a checklist of voting rules in your state, visit www.866ourvote.org/pages/state-specfic-voter-education-materials.
- Once you get to the polls, don’t take “no” for an answer. If you are a registered voter, don’t leave your polling place without casting a ballot. If you encounter a problem, call Election Protection for help at 866-OUR-VOTE, the largest non-partisan coalition of poll watchers and lawyers.
- If necessary, request an emergency paper ballot or, as a last resort, a provisional ballot. (Provisional ballots are less likely to be counted.)
