Obama Thanks APWU for Endorsement
July 17, 2008
Sen. Barack Obama has formally thanked the APWU for its support during the presidential primary season and for its endorsement of his candidacy.
“I am proud to stand with APWU in our joint efforts to build an America that values the labor of every American,” Obama said in a letter to union President William Burrus. “The men and women of APWU, and all working families, deserve a president who is committed to improving the lives of working families.”
Burrus said that the April endorsement by the union’s National Executive Board, made 10 weeks before many other unions announced support for Obama, has been validated. “There is a growing feeling that Sen. Obama’s message of ‘hope and change’ is taking hold. We continue to believe that he will be a strong advocate for the interests of working Americans.”
Delegates to the union’s National Convention will have the opportunity to vote on the endorsement at the August meeting in Las Vegas.
In his thank-you letter, Obama said that the union’s “hard work and support” during the primaries contributed to his historic victory in the quest for the Democratic nomination. “I look forward to working with you, not just to win in November,” he wrote, “but to deliver on the change working Americans deserve.”
