USPS Trims List to 162
January 29, 2010
The USPS announced Jan. 29 that the list of stations and branches being considered for closure has been reduced to 162, six less than the last update on Dec. 15. The Postal Service cautioned again that the list does not represent a final decision on which locations would be closed.
“No facility-specific final decisions have been made as a result of this initiative,” the Postal Service said in a press release.
The filing with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) is the latest update in a USPS cost-cutting process that began last summer. More than 3,200 stations and branches were originally under review and potentially slated for closure.
APWU President William Burrus insisted that the union will continue to oppose station and branch closures. “Closing stations and branches reduces service to our customers,” he said. “In the long run, it will hurt the Postal Service itself.”
Vice President Cliff Guffey encouraged union members to remain active in the fight against closures. “The efforts of our members have stopped many closures and consolidations. I encourage our locals to remain vigilant.”
