In Memoriam: Robert  “Bob” Bloomer Jr.

September 8, 1959 – December 8, 2025

Robert “Bob” Bloomer Jr., a devoted family man and a champion for working people across the nation, passed away on December 8, 2025. Born on September 8, 1959, Bob lived a life defined by dedication—to his family, to his community, and to the Union that he served faithfully for more than four decades.

Bob was the beloved son of Joann and Robert Sr., both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted wife, Valerie, his loving sister Deborah, and three daughters who were the pride of his life: Ashley (Chris), Amanda (Ashley), and Alli. He also leaves behind three cherished grandsons. Bob’s love for his family was unwavering; no matter how demanding his work became, he always made sure they knew he was their biggest supporter.

A Legacy of Union Stewardship

Bob’s remarkable career with the United States Postal Service began on February 7, 1981, at the Mid Hudson, New York P&DC. His leadership qualities became evident early on, and he soon stepped up to serve as the Mid-Hudson Area Local Shop Steward. In 1985, Bob transferred to Clearwater, Florida, where he continued his rise as a respected and influential union leader, ultimately serving as President of the Clearwater Area Local.

His impact, however, extended far beyond local representation. Beginning in 1989, Bob became a National Arbitration Advocate—an extraordinary role in which he would go on to arbitrate more than 600 cases, earning a reputation as one of the APWU’s most knowledgeable, prepared, and successful advocates. His commitment to fairness, justice, and improving the working lives of postal employees was evident in every case he handled.

From 1997 to 2000, Bob served as a Special Assistant under National APWU President Moe Biller, contributing to national strategy and strengthening the Union’s voice during pivotal years. His leadership continued when he became the National Business Agent for the Clerk Division in the Atlanta Region, a position he held honorably from 2000 until his retirement in 2018.

Service Beyond Retirement

Retirement did little to slow Bob down. Even after formally concluding his USPS career, he continued to serve the APWU as a National Arbitration Advocate and took on special projects that benefited postal workers across the country. His passion for the Union never faded; he believed deeply in protecting the dignity, rights, and livelihoods of every member he represented.

A Life Remembered

Bob will be remembered not only for his tremendous contributions to the APWU, but for the kind, steady, and principled person he was. His dedication to the Union was matched only by his devotion to his family—he was a loving husband, a proud father, a doting grandfather, and a loyal friend.

His legacy lives on in the countless workers whose lives he improved, the colleagues he mentored, and the family who will forever cherish his memory.

May he rest in peace, knowing his life’s work made a lasting difference.

To honor Bob’s wishes, the family will not be holding a funeral or memorial service.
