In this Step 4 Denial, the Postal Service found that the grievant failed to submit acceptable medical evidence in support of his request for approved sick leave and therefore, his request was properly denied. In their view, local officials may require employees to request that Form 3971 be signed by a physician to substantiate an employee's request for sick leave. However, if the physician refused to utilize the form, acceptable medical statements and certifications written on the doctor's office memo or stationary would be honored. It was their conclusion that no violation of the National Agreement occurred and the grievance was denied.
