Time is running out for the Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance Program (FEGLI)’s Open Season, which ends Sept. 30. This is the first FEGLI Open Season since 2004.

Until the end of the month, postal and federal employees who are eligible for FEGLI, may enroll for the first time or increase their coverage without taking a physical exam, answering medical questions, or waiting for a “qualifying life event,” such as marriage, divorce, death of a spouse or the addition of an eligible child to the family. Employees who are in their first 12 months of workers’ compensation are also eligible, but they must meet pay and duty status requirements before their coverage can come into effect.

Postal workers are automatically are enrolled in the basic FEGLI coverage when they are hired and pay the premiums through payroll deduction unless they decline coverage. Employees who are happy with their FEGLI coverage don’t need to do anything during open season to maintain their coverage. You can reduce or cancel your FEGLI coverage at any time without waiting for an open season.

You can make your Open Season election using the existing FEGLI election form, Standard Form SF 2817 [PDF]. Submit your election to your agency’s human resources office, PO BOX 971300, GreensboroNC 27497-1300.
