National Association of Letter Carriers Stands with APWU to ‘Stop Staples’
March 19, 2014
The National Association of Letter Carriers is taking a stand in support of the APWU’s fight against the sweetheart deal between the USPS and Staples that puts postal retail operations in Staples stores — and staffs them with low-wage, high-turnover Staples employees rather than postal employees.
In a March 18 posting on the NALC’s website, President Fredric Rolando encouraged all NALC members to “join with the APWU and other postal unions in a National Day of Action on Thursday, April 24, to protest the privatization of postal retail services at Staples stores.”
“Americans value and deserve postal services provided by highly trained, uniformed and accountable employees who work directly for the Postal Service, not for an office-supplies retail chain,” Rolando said. “Just as the members of the APWU stand with the NALC in our battle to preserve six-day mail delivery service, so do letter carriers stand with our brothers and sisters in this fight against privatization.”
APWU President Mark Dimondstein applauded the NALC’s statement. “We appreciate the support of our brothers and sisters in the NALC, which follows a verbal commitment from all of the postal unions to support this struggle,” he said. “This is the true meaning of solidarity.
“This unity will strengthen our fight for a vibrant, public Postal Service.” APWU locals should be sure to reach out to our brothers and sisters in the National Association of Letter Carriers when they are organizing protests, he said.
