Several people have inquired about the designation “FERS-RAE” on the Form 50s of employees who were recently converted from Postal Support Employee to career.

The new designation reflects that the employees were hired as career employees on or after Jan. 1, 2013, and are covered under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) as Revised Annuity Employees (RAE).

In accordance with the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012, career employees hired on or after Jan. 1, 2013, pay more for their retirement benefits than their predecessors. The law increased the contributions of new career employees to their retirement by 2.3 percent, raising deductions from 0.8 percent to 3.1 percent.
