Ballots for the 2007 Election of APWU National Officers are being mailed Wednesday, Sept. 12, to Saturday, Sept. 15. Every member in good standing as of June 15, 2007, will receive a ballot.

For a ballot to be valid, it must be received by the APWU National Election Committee in the designated post office box in Washington, DC, by 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5.

Members in good standing who have not received their ballots by Thursday, Sept. 20, should notify their local, or should contact the American Arbitration Association between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (EDT) at 800-529-5218 to request a duplicate. Ballots may also be requested by e-mail to apwu@adr.org.

To receive a duplicate ballot, members must provide their name and the last four digits of their Social Security number (or their complete Employee Identification Number), along with their local, craft, mailing address, and telephone number.

The APWU National Election Committee will pick up the ballots from the Washington post office box at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5. Votes will be tallied at the Madison Hotel, 1177 15th St. NW, Washington, DC. The hotel’s phone number is 202-862-1600.

Unofficial election results will be posted on the union’s Web site, www.apwu.org, as soon as they are available, and will be updated frequently. Official results are expected by Oct. 12.

Locals Who Get Out the Vote! to Be Rewarded

“The democratic principles of our union have value only if the membership engages in the process and expresses its wishes,” APWU President William Burrus said about the upcoming election of the union’s national officers.

It’s Your Union: Don’t Neglect  Your Ballot

“Postal employees have no excuse for not voting,” he said. “The postage is prepaid and, as postal employees, each APWU member reports to a postal facility each working day. You need only to complete your ballot and take it with you to work.”

Once again, the national union will hold a voter-participation competition among locals, rewarding those that vote in the election at the highest percentages.

The incentive for engaging the membership in the election process will be cash payments to be used on behalf of the membership at the discretion of the locals. Tickets to movies or ball games and membership parties are among the benefits that could be awarded to local members for exercising their APWU right to vote.

The top three locals in each of the following size categories will receive cash awards: 1,000 members and above ($4,000); 500-999 ($2,000); 100-499 ($1,000); 1-99 members ($200).

To be eligible, locals must reach a voter participation level of at least 50 percent. If more than three locals in any category generate 100 percent participation, all “100%” locals will receive awards.

To help decide who will lead the union for the next three years, be sure to vote in this year’s election of APWU national officers. It’s your union. VOTE!
