The Federal Trade Commission made the right call today in challenging the proposed merger between Staples and Office Depot. The American Postal Workers Union has opposed this deal since it was first announced.

Our union met twice with FTC staff. We published two studies on the negative impact that the proposed merger would have on consumers and businesses. Our analysis showed that a merger leaving just one national chain of office-supply superstore would inevitably force customers to pay higher prices while leaving them with fewer choices.

We’re glad the commissioners listened to the concerns of APWU members, along with other consumers, as well as large and small businesses across the United States.  We’ll all be better off when this deal has been put to rest once and for all.
