Tune in to Hear What the APWU is Doing to Fight the Sale of the Post Office

Our fight to stop postal privatization will continue well after the election! We must continue to advocate for a public Postal Service and keep it from being sold off to the highest bidder.

On Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. EST and 7 p.m. EST the Legislative & Political Department will host a call updating the membership on the US Mail Not for Sale campaign. President Mark Dimondstein and Legislative & Political Director Judy Beard will discuss:

• The current status of the White House’s plan to sell the Postal Service to private corporations (privatize the Postal Service).
• The status of House Resolution 993 and Senate Resolution 633, and what to expect from Congress in the lame duck session.
• Building public support after the successful National Day of Action on Oct. 8.
• How members can get involved in upcoming campaign actions.

Some locals will also be sharing various actions they have taken to engage members and the public during the fight against postal privatization.

Give to the Combined Federal Campaign

The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is the largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign in the world. During the CFC, postal, federal and military employees have the opportunity to make tax deductible donations to one or several of their favorite charities through payroll deduction.

Postal workers are known for their generosity, and the APWU National Executive Board encourages members to donate to causes that are near and dear to their hearts. In the wake of Hurricane Florence, Matthew and other national disasters across the country, APWU members may consider donating to the Postal Employees Relief Fund (PERF), one of the many organizations employees can designate during the campaign.

PERF was established to assist in trying times such as these. PERF is our non-profit organization that belongs to all postal workers. Administered by union representatives and postal management, PERF depends on our generosity to help coworkers and retirees rebuild their lives after natural disasters and home fires strike.

Association of Flight Attendants-CWA Produces Video Against Postal Privatization

In a strong show of solidarity, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA produced a video to educate flight attendants and other workers about the importance of public postal services and the role of solidarity in winning our fights.

“The U.S. Postal Service mail and packages fly on our planes. The routes we fly to communities across the country depend on a strong United States Postal Service,” said Sara Nelson, President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. “We’re standing with our sisters and brothers from [the four postal unions] to stop privatization!”

The video features APWU convention delegates speaking about the importance of a public Postal Service and the need to stand in solidarity.

Courtney Agee from Birmingham, Alabama is ready for the fight against privatization: “We can prevent this. We can. We can band together. We cannot be scared. I can’t even imagine America without the Postal Service.”

“Look to your left, look to your right, look behind you, and tell everyone around you, ‘I’ve got your back!,’” proclaimed Nelson at the August APWU convention in Pittsburgh. Nelson’s call for solidarity inspired APWU
member Stephanie McGee from Kansas City. “To see that you have other unions that support you and that have your back 100 percent,” said McGee, “it’s a wonderful thing.”
