Short Term CR Fails to Prevent Mail Processing Closures and Consolidations
This week, the House and Senate passed a continuing resolution to fund the federal government through December 11, 2014. Unfortunately, this continuing resolution did not include a 1-year moratorium on closing or consolidating mail processing facilities or cutting mail service standards – a position publicly supported by a majority of senators and 160 representatives.
Absent congressional intervention, the Postal Service is proceeding with plans to slow down the mail and close or consolidate 82 mail processing facilities starting in January 2015. After passing the continuing resolution this week, Congress adjourned and will remain in recess until after the November midterm elections.
The APWU and our allies will have another opportunity to include this important moratorium once Congress reconvenes and begins work on the next government funding bill, a must to prevent another government shutdown. While our senators and representatives are back home over the recess, it is important for APWU locals to reach out, schedule a meeting, and educate our elected officials about the real harm of these cuts and the importance of securing a moratorium.
Even though Congress has failed to act before the recess, the battle continues on many other fronts in addition to these important legislative efforts. The APWU, other postal unions, and our allies are hard at work organizing the fight community by community and plant by plant to preserve good service and good jobs.
